Teen Mentoring

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Prince Edward Island offers a Teen Mentoring program where students in Leadership or Peer Helper programs spend one hour per week as a volunteer Mentor with a child in Elementary School. Teens develop leadership skills while fulfilling a friendship-based relationship with children who need one-to-one attention.

The mentees in the program have the opportunity to relate to an older student while engaging in fun and educational activities. Experience has shown that mentors help reduce the stress younger students feel about leaving Elementary School to attend an Intermediate School.

Big Brothers Big Sisters staff screen, train, provide materials and assists the school in monitoring the matches which have been suggested by teachers and guidance counselors.

What Teens have had to say about their experience:

-“It was a really great experience for me as a mentor. And it was really important to do it and influence other kids”.
- “I just wanted to thank BBBSPEI for this opportunity; I would love to be involved in any other volunteering options”
-I feel it’s a very good experience for both us and the kids being able to interact with each other. We’re teaching each other new things and are learning more about kids growing up"
